WHAT IS STOPPING YOU?

 

A common theme within the Gospel of Luke is discipleship or following the Lord. A disciple follows and imitates the life of Jesus in his words and actions. Unlike the rabbis of the day where people came and sat at the feet of the wise man, Jesus seeks followers in His travels. In every age, His call is the same: “Follow me!” Today we see various responses of those asked to follow Him. What is your response?

There are three personal responses identified in the Gospel. The first person seems so full of energy and commitment to follow the Lord. He wants to follow the Lord wherever and whatever it takes. Jesus reminds man of the sense of urgency in following Him. Even the birds and foxes have places to sleep, so those who follow the Lord should trust in God completely. Did this man continue to follow even though he wasn’t guaranteed a roof over his head?

The second person is interested in following Jesus, but has a responsibility to bury his father first. We do not know whether the father is dying or whether the man will just hang around waiting, and then follow the Lord. Jesus responds to this excuse in seemingly offensive terms: “Let the dead bury the dead!” There is work to do and familial responsibilities and customs cannot hold us back.

The third person is willing to follow but his family ties hold him back. He wants to say goodbye to folks at home. Fair enough. But Jesus calls forth a response from the man in following Him. To follow Jesus must be his focus. We cannot be too attached to our families. There must be direction and purpose, not always looking back at what might be.

Following Jesus involves total commitment, focus and dedication. It involves a willingness to be detached and go wherever He calls us to. There is a sense of urgency that even the comforts of home, family and tradition cannot divert our attention from it. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL

Lord, I desire to follow You with all my heart. Help me to set aside the things that are hindering me from following You completely. Amen.
