SOWING THE RIGHT SEEDS
It is up to each one of us what seeds we will allow to be sown in our hearts, minds, and lives. Unfortunately, we do not always apply discernment. We allow the ways and values of the world to influence our thoughts and actions. We need to work at forming our minds and hearts in the ways and truths of God. We also have to actively work against the negative and incorrect values so often espoused in the media and the general run of life. If we are not vigilant, then our minds and hearts will be formed by default in the ways and thinking of the world.
The world is so complex. There are multiple and diverse views and attitudes toward life. Some are healthy and some are not. It is not that difficult to discern the values that are contrary to the Gospel. For example, any idea that does not respect the fundamental dignity of life is to be rejected. As Christians, we need to be unashamed to speak the truth in love and even go into battle, if necessary, to defend the essential truths of our faith and the moral life.
Jesus never compromised the truth in His ministry. He reached out to all people with compassion and love but did not hesitate to speak the truth to them about their sinfulness. He did not condemn the people for their sins, as long as they were repentant. We ought to reach out to the world with compassion and mercy in order to love the sinner and at the same time to reject any sin. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL
---------- REFLECTION QUESTIONS ----------
Are you too afraid to defend the teachings of the Church because it might make you unpopular? Are you willing to embrace the truth no matter what it may cost you?
Holy Spirit, strengthen me to be Your disciple so that I will always do the will of God in my life. Amen.
