Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows

1st READING

Jesus, the Son of God, suffered grievously for our sake. We, too, should be willing to suffer for the sake of the Gospel. Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows, endured much grief at the foot of the cross of her only Son. I cannot even imagine what must have been going through her mind, especially she now understood that God had sent Jesus on a special mission. Suffering only makes sense within the context of the cross of Jesus and the work of salvation. Let us entrust our suffering to God as intercession for the lost souls in the world.

1 Corinthians 12:12-14, 27-31 (or Hebrews 5:7-9)

12 Brothers and sisters: As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one Body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit. 14 Now the body is not a single part, but many. 27 Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. 28 Some people God has designated in the Church to be, first, Apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then, mighty deeds; then, gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and varieties of tongues. 29 A re all A postles? A re all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work mighty deeds? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 Strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts.

PSALM

Psalm 100:1-2, 3, 4, 5

R: We are his people: the sheep of his flock.

Sing joyfully to the Lord, all you lands; serve the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful song. (R) Know that the Lord is God; he made us, his we are; his people, the flock he tends. (R) Enter his gates with thanksgiving, his courts with praise; Give thanks to him; bless his name. (R) For he is good, the Lord, whose kindness endures forever, and his faithfulness, to all generations. (R)

GOSPEL

Mary stood at the foot of the cross during the most painful hours of Jesus’ passion. How profoundly Mary felt and entered into the sufferings of her Son for the salvation of the world. Since she has deeply experienced human suffering, she is able to enter into our suffering and bring her motherly comfort and succour. Let us invite Mary to enter our hearts and give us her comfort and consolation.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Blessed are you, O Virgin Mary; without dying you won the martyr’s crown beneath the Cross of the Lord.

John 19:25-27 (or Luke 2:33-35 or Luke 7:11-17)

25 Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

Reflect: Imagine that you are standing at the foot of the cross with Mary. What will you say to her as you both witness the passion and death of Jesus?
