HEROD HAS SOME PROBLEMS
Herod
has a few problems. He knows he has ordered the murder of a righteous
man, John the Baptist, for purely selfish reasons. Now there seems to be
someone who does very similar, if not greater, things than what John
the Baptist did. What is he going to do now? Herod is a weak man and I
can imagine that this issue is causing him sleepless nights. This is the
problem we face when we cling to sin and do not entrust our lives to
God.
We will face problems of varying degrees of difficulty in life. We can
try to solve them on our own or ask the help of God through faith. One
of Herod’s biggest problems is that he is so self-centered that he
cannot see beyond himself, let alone God. This is precisely where our
modern world is heading to with its reliance on science and secular
materialism.
Human life is not another commodity that can be engaged in purely
material terms. We are spiritual beings, having been created in the
image and likeness of God Himself. We need to learn to step aside from
the confusion of modern-day materialism and refocus our lives on the
spiritual realities that will outlast every material one. Otherwise, we
will become simply another material “thing” in the world that will be
traded and consumed like any other stock on the market. This would be a
terrible disservice to all that God has given us.
Let us make our lives more than this. Let us ensure that our spirits,
our potential for greatness in relation to God our Father, is not lost
in the midst of the consumeristic world. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL
REFLECTION
QUESTION: Does your mind drift more to the things of God or the things
of the world? If the latter, then maybe you need to reflect more on the
spiritual realities of life.
Holy
Spirit, keep awakening in my mind and heart my need for life of the
Spirit. Help me to be in constant touch with the Spirit of God at all
times in my life.
