GOD LOOKS AFTER HIS OWN
God’s
promise of His presence in our lives is not a guarantee that nothing
bad will happen to us. Bad things happen to us as a result of our own or
someone else’s sin. However, we can be sure that if we truly follow
God’s will, He will provide us with everything that we need to
accomplish it. Part of my priestly formation was being sent on a mission
with another brother for six days. We took no money and only a single
change of clothes. It was a great experience of trusting God to provide
for us, but the best part was sharing our stories when we returned home —
there were about eight pairs who went out.
I am not suggesting that we all need to go out with nothing and
proclaim the Gospel, but the principle behind our superior sending us
out (and he joined us in the exercise) is one deeply rooted in the
Gospel and in the spiritual tradition of the Church. When it comes to
salvation, we have to learn to entrust everything to God because we
cannot do it on our own. The more we learn to trust Him, the deeper our
experience of His Spirit will be, and the more we will trust Him. This
is a wonderful spiral that ends in holiness.
The Holy Spirit has been given to us in order to facilitate our trust
and faith in God and so we should never hesitate to cry out to Him for
help. He is always ready to give us what we need to embrace God’s will.
Jesus Himself often spent time in prayer before the big events and
decisions of His life. He knew the power available to Him through His
relationship with His Father. If it is true for Jesus, how much more
will it be true for us? Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL
REFLECTION
QUESTIONS: Are you willing to entrust your life to God and go where He
leads you? Or is your life your own and nobody has the right to tell you
what to do with it?
Jesus,
open my heart to the truth that You always want the best for me and
will always provide what I need to follow You. Help me to trust that
Your will is the best thing for my life.
