Have you found your purpose in life? What are you doing to fulfill it? - Daily Reflections January 14,2015

FOR THIS PURPOSE, I HAVE COME

Many years of formation work have taught me precious insights into human nature. I can look back to some really unforgettable characters. The ones that stand out are those that I refer to as “butterflies.” Give them something to do and all they do more than half the time is flutter like wings, hop from place to place, hover over others who are busy working, and suck the nectar of the latest news just about everyone and everything. There was even one who, while carrying a bunch of keys, kept on fluttering in the air, making huge circles, smiling at everyone, unmindful that for every turn of the bunch, one key was flying off the bunch until only one key was left. Needless to say, he spent the other half of the work time retracing his steps, trying to locate each and every key.
I have learned that there are students who, just as soon as they get to know what the requirements are, lose no time in doing them. They just go to work and promptly submit their work even before the deadline. In contrast, there are those who love to procrastinate. They have time for movies and the Internet, but they always lack the time to do scholastic work.
Today’s Gospel passage gives us a glimpse of a typical day in the public life of our Lord. He was busy with a thousand and one things, and engaged in as many concerns. He was not exactly idle at the synagogue. On leaving the synagogue, He was met with a very real and urgent concern — the health of Peter’s mother-in-law. He proceeded to help her up and heal her.
He was a rock star and up until evening, “the whole town was gathered at the door.” I don’t know whether Mark was exaggerating, but I take it that there was an impossible number to manage, but the Gospel says, “He cured many who were sick with various diseases.” Read: He worked overtime!
But here’s the clincher — He went to nearby villages, too. “For this purpose, I have come!” Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Have you found your purpose in life? What are you doing to fulfill it?

Grant me zeal, Lord, to do what You have planned for me to do when You created me.
