Silence and prayer are needed for a healthy faith relationship with Jesus - Daily Bible Readings July 29,2014


1ST READING
 
St. Martha has a great heart for service but there eventually comes a time when silence and reflection are more important than running around and serving everybody. Without silence and prayer, we cannot be formed in the ways of God and will not know how He wants us to serve Him. Both are needed for a healthy faith relationship with Jesus.
 
1 John 4:7-16 (or Jeremiah 14:17-22)
7 Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. 8 Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love. 9 In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only-begotten Son into the world so that we might have life through him. 10 In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us. 13 This is how we know that we remain in him and he in us, that he has given us of his Spirit. 14 Moreover, we have seen and testify that the Father sent his Son as savior of the world. 15 Whoever acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him and he in God. 16 We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him.

GOSPEL
 
John 11:19-27 (or Luke 10:38-42 or Matthew 13:36-43)
 
Martha is completely aware of who Jesus is as the Son of God and of His power to raise Lazarus from the dead. She believes in the fullness of the Gospel message even though Jesus has not yet died and risen from the dead. Is this possible? Jesus is there at the scene, so that makes anything possible. The graces of the resurrection were made available before Jesus was even born, so that makes this scenario possible, too.
 
I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will have the light of life. 19 Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother [Lazarus, who had died]. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.” 24 Martha said to him, “I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.” 25 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.”
