THE GIFT OF JESUS
Our
faith teaches us that we have a high priest who has gone before us and
is seated at the right hand of God. He intercedes for us. What was begun
in His priestly prayer at the Last Supper, which is outlined in the
Gospel, is what Jesus continues to do now before the Father. Jesus not
only prays for us but prays for those who will hear our words — that
they come to believe in Him as the One sent by the Father. And He not
only prays for us but dwells within us through the powerful work of the
Holy Spirit whom He has sent as the gift of the Father.
In the Third Eucharistic Prayer, the priest prays that we would become
“an eternal offering” to the Father. In Jesus’ prayer, He mentioned that
we are the Father’s gift to Him. This is worthy of our reflection.
Many times, we thank God for the gifts we have and those things we
share. Have we ever thought of the fact that we are Jesus’ gift to the
Father? The Father has accepted us in Christ as an eternal offering. He
never despises those whom the Son gives Him. And we can trust in the
promise of Jesus that we will be with Him wherever He is: “I wish that
where I am, they may also be with me.” And that we would be united in
the love of the Father for Jesus, “that the love with which You loved me
may be in them and I may
be in them.”
Jesus says elsewhere in the Gospel of John that those who love and obey
Him will be loved by the Father, who comes and abides in the believer.
