What’s your fondest memory about your home? - Daily Reflections February 5,2014

WHEN I THINK OF HOME

Entering the seminary in 1979, people were amazed there were actually four of us coming from Tondo. I could hear them whisper, “So there are actually Tondo boys wanting to enter the seminary?” They smiled in disbelief, knowing very well that my home district is infamous for several things, without them realizing that Tondo also produced two national artists, several heroes and prominent public servants. It’s also home to some of the best public schools in the Philippines.
In Tondo, I learned the value of simplicity, laughter and contentment. Bo Sanchez loves sharing this story about me and our poor family: On my 10th birthday, Nanay was leading everyone to sing “Happy Birthday” to me. Just when I was about to blow the candle, she asked for my birthday wish. Since she had asked, and I was such an honest kid, I remember saying, “Lord, I wish that next year, my birthday candle will come with a cake.”
It was not always like that, though. There were tougher, more difficult times, but we managed. We remained strong and committed to help each other. Tondo became my nest while I was still learning how to fly, and now that I can already soar high and go places, I still look forward to those occasions when I can rest again in my Tondo nest, visiting relatives and friends who have helped me grow.
I might have been stereotyped before, and even until today, as a Tondo boy. People might have judged me because of that. Just like what Jesus experienced in the Gospel today, people took offense at Him. He was simply amazed at their lack of faith, and continued on doing His ministry. I have always been inspired by this reaction of Jesus, so whenever I am stereotyped as a Tondo boy, I can only smile and thank them for reminding me again of my origin, and filling my heart with joy about all the great memories of my humble Tondo sanctuary. REFLECTION QUESTION: What’s your fondest memory about your home?

Lord Jesus, thank You for the many lessons learned from the harsh realities of life.
