SEA AND WIND

The Sea of Galilee is situated in a basin-like location, below the great Jordan Valley. It is the largest freshwater lake in Israel. Any wind that travels through the valley acts like a tunnel of gale force wind passing onto the lake. Whenever a storm breaks out on the lake, it is a serious matter. No wonder the disciples are terrified.
Matthew reports that Jesus is sleeping. He is tired. Ministry has left Him exhausted and now He is resting. Unbeknown to Him, the disciples are fighting for their lives amidst the violence of the waves and wind. Notice that upon waking, Jesus questions their faith: “Why are you so afraid?” I am sure you and I would be afraid if we were in their situation. They lacked faith! Notice that all is calm upon the word of Jesus. When Jesus speaks, there is peace and order. No disturbance can rob our calmness when Jesus is near; we just need faith.
Water is seen as the place of evil. The underworld is rampant with terror and chaos. God spoke His Word at the beginning of creation when the waters covered the earth. He speaks His Word of life and love to the disciples in the midst of the stormy waters.
Even the winds and sea obey Him. The winds are often fierce in our life. They cause confusion and disorder. They distract us from the course of life, from following the Lord. These winds and seas, too, have their own power over our lives. Often we can be overwhelmed by the sea of sin seeking to drown us and to lead us out into the depths, to the point of no return. But there is another wind and sea that we must pursue. The sea of God’s love is more overwhelming, powerful enough to reconcile us and bring us back to Him. The wind of the Spirit blows where it wills and has the strength to carry us deeper into the life of Christ. Let us call upon the sea of God’s love and the wind of the Holy Spirit. Fr. REFLECTION QUESTION: What are the winds and seas in your life?

Lord, hide me in the refuge of Your love and peace. Speak to my soul the words of peace and joy again. Amen.
