LISTENING TO THE WORD OF GOD
God
does not use text, email or phone calls to speak to us, but I know that
He speaks to us if we are willing to listen to His voice. This means
learning how to recognize His voice from the other voices that bombard
our ears from time to time. The voices of sin and the world are not shy
about making their intentions known. This means that we have to work a
little harder to ensure that we find God’s voice in the midst of the
background noise out there.
Jesus
often set time aside to seek out His Father’s voice from among the many
voices telling Him what He should do, and some of those voices were
pretty persuasive and had a lot of authority behind them, including most
of the religious authorities of His day. Remember that the most
important voice we will ever listen to is that of God. At the end of
Chapter 6 of John’s Gospel, Peter speaks truly when he says that Jesus’
words are the words of everlasting life and that there is no one else
they can go to except Him.
Most
of the lives of the saints include an experience of hearing God speak
to them their mission. What is also important for us to understand and
imitate is that they were obedient to that call. It is this obedience
that makes the difference between a good idea and a mission that can
change the world. If we have given our lives to the will of God, then we
can be sure that we will be a part of something significant and
life-changing for others. There are many things in the world that we can
or could do, but what will make a difference is if they are what Jesus
is asking us to do. Fr. Steve Tynan,

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Are you willing to surrender your life to the will of God? Do you really understand what that means?
Jesus,
grant me the grace to follow Your example of obedience so that all I do
in life will be according to the will of God. Let me seek to serve and
not be served.
