WHO WANTS TO BE A SAINT?
If you really want to make a difference in the world then you first have to believe that you have what it takes to do that. A good start for this is the desire to be a saint and the willingness to pay the price for such a goal. Only a few Christians desire to become saints. Most of us are satisfied with mediocrity because we believe that we need to do “just enough” to avoid hell and gain eternal life. It is this sort of minimalistic thinking and acting that will stop the spread of the Gospel in its tracks.
The Gospel demands that we reflect upon the great missionary pushes of the Church, to reflect upon the lives of the men and women we acclaim as saints, and to imitate them as best we can. I am confident that God will give us all the necessary graces to become saints if that is what we truly desire for our lives. God can’t resist being that generous if He can be sure that the grace will not be wasted. It is up to each of us to show God that it is worth investing in us when it comes to working for His kingdom.
The Beatitudes are wonderful to reflect on as these teach us the demands of the Gospel in our lives. Jesus teaches His disciples that we have to seek the blessings of the Lord in all that we do and with this discipline will flow the immeasurable worth of the gifts and graces of the Holy Spirit. It is not a matter of earning God’s blessings, but simply demonstrating to God that if He invests in us we will not disappoint Him. It is not an easy path to walk but I cannot think of one more rewarding than living at the heart of the mission of the Church, knowing that we are doing God’s will. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL
REFLECTION QUESTIONS: What is the deepest desire of your heart? Is this a truly worthy desire? Should you modify your goals in life so that they will be more in accord with the Gospel?
Holy Spirit, help me to embrace the Kingdom of God as best I can and to live according to God’s will.
