THE PROMISE OF GOD
One of the most repeated promises of God that we hear in the Scriptures is that no matter what we do, God has promised us that He will not abandon us. Time and time again we hear these sentiments and witness the reality of God working with the people of Israel even after they have abandoned Him or given their allegiance to other worldly powers or gods.
Here, Jeremiah once again promises the faithfulness of God to His people. He affirms the Lord’s faithfulness to the covenant He made with Moses and challenges the people of Israel to look deep within their hearts in the hope that they would discover, or better yet, rediscover, the truth that the commitment to the covenant and its laws are written in their hearts. This is a challenge that is relevant to all people of all time as we need to look into our hearts from time to time to remind ourselves of this truth.
Each of us is tempted to drift from the central focus of our relationship with God. Sin attempts to deflect us from this truth little by little and we do not realize that we are distancing ourselves from God. Before we know it, our relationship with God is seriously damaged.
When we notice we are drifting in our relationship with God, we need to refocus and recommit ourselves to it. This can be difficult because all the temptations of the world and sin will be pulling us in the opposite direction. It is precisely at this point that we discover that a healthy relationship with God depends on a disciplined lifestyle, one that keeps the basics of the spiritual life to the forefront of our attention. REFLECTION QUESTIONS: How strong is your relationship with God? Have you allowed temptation to deflect your attention from your relationship with God?
Lord Jesus, help me to realize that the most important relationship that I have is with You. Never allow me to forget this and help me to keep it at the center of my attention.
