Daily Reflections- August 14, 2012

LISTEN AND DO NOT REBEL

Following on from yesterday’s reflection, we discover Ezekiel responding to God’s Word in his life. God warns Ezekiel not to rebel against His word. He does not give any reason why Ezekiel should not rebel; He does not need to because He is our Creator and therefore we should always be willing to listen to whatever He wants to say to us. We have little respect or time for excuses of those who fail to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding the use of their products. Why would it be any different when it comes to obedience to our Creator?
In Jesus’ life, we constantly witness His obedience to the Word of His Father in heaven. If we study the lives of the saints, we will see a similar obedience to God’s Word. With such examples before us, the exhortation “not to rebel” ought to be superfluous. Yet the problem is that we fail to heed the Word of God. Why is this so? “Sin,” I hear you answer, and you’re right! However, this is not a valid excuse. Yes, there is sin and temptation all around us but Jesus has put the power of sin to death on the cross. We do not have to listen to the temptations of sin anymore. We have the power to reject temptation and choose the Word of God as the formative power in our lives.
Many people will continue to follow the word of temptation rather than the Word of God but there may be little we can do about that. What is clearly our responsibility is our own response to God’s call.
Let us reflect on the example of Ezekiel and when we hear God calling us, let us follow where He leads and never rebel against the Word of Life as He speaks it to us in our daily lives. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: How attentive are you to the Word of God? Do you listen daily to Him or do you presume you know best for your life?

Holy Spirit, let me always consider the Word of God as one of the highest priorities in my life. Let me never tire of seeking God’s Word as I know it is the source of true life.
