GIVING IT OUR ALL

There is nothing more frustrating than watching a lazy sportsman who is not giving his best in a game. In most competitions, this will mean that the player will be dropped and he has to prove his commitment is true before he’s allowed to play another game. And rightly so!
There can be similar problems when it comes to our spiritual lives. We can presume upon the goodness of God and therefore fail to give our best in His service, knowing that He is a loving God. We can simply be lazy about our commitments to prayer and ministry. In either case, there will ultimately be consequences that are not good.
If we live a compromised spiritual life, we are inviting disaster to come in. We compromise our spiritual life when we give sin a free rein in our lives by the choices we make. How silly can we get? Yet it happens far more frequently than we want to admit. The best way to keep sin and temptation at bay is to seriously go after our spiritual lives. A man like St. Lawrence is a great example for us in his commitment to faithfulness and truth. The challenge for us is to identify how God is calling us to respond as His disciples. Where in my life is God asking me to respond more deeply, to grow in discipleship?
There is no room for complacency and presumption in the life of a disciple. We are either committed to grow in holiness or we allow sin to establish a home in our lives. It is as simple as that.
Being faithful to the call God has placed on our lives is simple —although not easy. Simply do what He asks us to do. When Mother Teresa talks about responding to God’s call in her life, she liked to put it this way: “Take what He gives and give what He takes.” Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Where is God asking you to grow in your life? How is He working in your life at the moment? Are you responding well?

Holy Spirit, grant me the grace to surrender all to the work of God in my life so that I will grow in holiness and be faithful in ministry.
