Daily Reflections- August 30, 2012

VIGILANT AND DILIGENT

The scenarios in today’s Gospel passage (a parable, actually) are all interesting: that of the thief, and that of the “faithful, farsighted servant.” In the case of the second one, Jesus has a wonderful compliment: “Happy that servant whom his master discovers at work on his return!”
Somehow similar or parallel to this is St. Paul’s nice statement from the beginning of his first letter to the Corinthians. He wrote, “I continually thank my God for you because of the favor he has bestowed on you in Christ Jesus, in whom you have been richly endowed with every gift of speech and knowledge.”
As our Lord and Master Jesus Christ endows us with gifts and blessings, we, for our part, should collaborate with Him through our own efforts. God’s grace is never automatic. We, his servants, have been put in charge, as it were, of His household. We cannot afford to sleep on the job. “Stay awake,” He warns us.
Aware of our need to obey and to collaborate, we take consolation in what St. Paul said, “He will strengthen you to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.” May we be ever vigilant and diligent, as servants of the Lord, all the time until He finally comes
back. We will render an account of the service we carried out while He was away, and hopefully He will reward us for our fidelity.Fr. Martin Macasaet, SDB

REFLECTION QUESTION: Are you using the gifts and talents that God has given you for His service?

Lord Jesus, may the way I live my life be pleasing to You. May You find me a worthy servant all the days of my life.
